Former deputy speaker Bir Devinder Singh today extended his support to former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal for the latter’s Jago Punjab Yatra, after the two held a closed-door meeting at the former’s residence here today. Manpreet Badal came to meet Bir Devinder Singh and held discussions about a possible political tie-up between the two.
While Manpreet has been expelled by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD),Bir Devinder, earlier a Congressman who had joined the SAD before the last Assembly polls, recently announced that he was quitting the SAD. After hour-long deliberations, the two leaders stated before the media that they had broadly agreed to support each other but made it clear that there was no political understanding yet.
Manpreet Badal said,”I have come here to seek the support of Bir Devinder Singh for my Punjab Jago Yatra,to which he has agreed on a broad front. The support is regardless of any political compulsions.” Jago Punjab Yatra is a campaign launched by Manpreet to “awaken every citizen of Punjab about six social evils plaguing the state, including its poor financial health”.
Bir Devinder Singh later said that he would join Manpreet Badal at Faridkot on November 24 and help awaken the citizens of Punjab on the six vital issues raised by the former FM. “These issues are near the heart of every Punjabi who feels for Punjab,” he said, adding that the once-thriving state had today turned “cick”.
Asked about any future political alliance between the two,Manpreet said that there was nothing on that front yet.
“The political party may or may not be formed at a later stage. Our first aim is to awaken the people of Punjab and hope the conscious citizens of the state would support him for the cause and help him act as a catalyst to bring about a change of guard in the state.”
Manpreet Badal said that the conscious people of Punjab were looking for a new leader who could lead the state out of the present crisis but clarified that it was not necessary that he (Manpreet) would be this leader. “It could be anyone. Manpreet may or may not be the leader of this change”. Manpreet also lauded Bir Devinder Singh as a senior leader with a lot of political experience and a good orator, hoping that his acumen would help make his Jago Punjab Yatra more effective and fruitful. Bir Devinder later said that the two had not discussed politics and such options were open between them.
Former Faridkot MLA Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon and Youth Akali Dal Fatehgarh Sahib district unit president Gurpreet Singh Bhatti were also present at today’s meeting.
