With the fate of political parties and candidates sealed in EVMs, all eyes are now on Friday when counting will begin at 10 am to know the 165 corporators, including two unopposed, of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The counting of votes is likely to go on late till evening.

The counting of votes for the PMC election has been decentralised and will be held at one centre for each of the 15 ward offices.

The civic administration has made necessary arrangements for the counting of votes. “It has been decided that counting of votes for each subcategory of a ward will be taken up simultaneously. After one ward result is declared the counting of the next ward will be undertaken,” said Omprakash Divate, Additional Municipal Commissioner, PMC.

There are 41 wards in PMC and four corporators from each of the 40 wards and five from a ward will be elected. Thus, the declaration of four winners of a ward will be done simultaneously.

First there will be counting of ballot votes, then the counting of EVM votes will be undertaken. The main tussle is between the BJP, which has fielded candidates on all 165 seats, and the alliance of Ajit Pawar-led NCP with Sharad Pawar-led NCP(SP).

The BJP had single-handedly held power in the previous five-year term from 2016 to 2022 after which the administrator had control of the civic body due to delay in civic polls after it was put on hold by the Supreme Court on reservation issue. The united NCP was then the main opposition party in PMC as its 10-year hold from 2007 to 2017 was ended by BJP.
