Parliament

Parliament is the chief legislative body of India. It constitutes the President of India, Rajya Sabha, the Upper House and Lok Sabha, the Lower House. The President of India is the head of Parliament. The President has full powers to summon and prorogue either house of Parliament or to dissolve Lok Sabha. However, he can exercise these powers only upon the advice of the Prime Minister and his cabinet. The representatives in either House of the Parliament are called Members of Parliament. Indian Parliament meets at the Sansad Bhavan in New Delhi, which stands on six acres of land. The Central hall consists of the chambers of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and the Library hall. Surrounding these chambers is a four-storied circular structure which accommodates the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Parliamentary Committees and offices. In 2001, the Parliament Complex was attacked by terrorists.
