Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday raised the issue of air pollution in major cities of the country and sought a discussion on it in the Lok Sabha.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Gandhi said the discussion on the issue can be framed in an interesting manner where the opposition and the government do not trade abuses at each other, but find a solution to the problem.

"This is not an ideological issue. Everybody in this House would agree that air pollution, the damage it is doing to our people, is something that we would like to cooperate on," Gandhi said.

The Congress leader said the prime minister can then put in place a plan to deal with the issue of air pollution.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday hailed his party MPs' performance during the debates on Vande Mataram and election reforms in the House, and told them that the government seemed "under pressure" from opposition on both the issues, sources said.

Gandhi, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, chaired a meeting with Congress MPs in the Lower House and also heard the views of the party legislators besides taking their feedback.

The Leader of Opposition stated at the meeting that the government seemed "under pressure" from the opposition on both Vande Mataram and election reforms debates, party sources said.

Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said it was discussed during the meeting that the party was successful in raising the current problems of the people such as IndiGo flight disruptions, air pollution and labour codes issue. (PTI)

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday condoled the demise of former Union minister Shivraj Patil, and said he was known for his vast knowledge of public affairs and dedicated service.

Patil passed away at his home town Latur in Maharashtra on Friday morning. He was 90. In a message on X, Shah said, "Saddened by the demise of former Union Minister Shivraj Patil Chakurkar Ji. With a career spanning several decades, Patil Ji was known for his vast knowledge of public affairs and his dedicated service. Heartfelt condolences to his family members and well-wishers." Born on October 12, 1935, Patil began his political journey as the president of Latur municipality between 1966 and 1970 and was subsequently elected as an MLA for two terms.

He then went on to win the Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times and was the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996.

President Droupadi Murmu on Friday condoled the death of former Union minister Shivraj Patil, saying the country has lost a prominent public figure.

Senior Congress leader and former Union home minister Patil passed away at his home in Maharashtra's Latur on Friday morning after a brief illness, family sources said. He was 90.

"In the demise of senior political leader Shri Shivraj Patil Ji, we have lost a prominent public figure. During his long public life, he held many important positions including those of Lok Sabha Speaker, Union Minister, Governor and longstanding Member of Parliament. My heartfelt condolences to his family, well-wishers and admirers," Murmu said in a post on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed grief over the death of former Union minister Shivraj Patil and said that he was passionate about contributing to the welfare of society.

Patil passed away in his hometown Latur in Maharashtra on Friday. He was 90.

"Saddened by the passing of Shri Shivraj Patil Ji. He was an experienced leader, having served as MLA, MP, Union Minister, Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly as well as the Lok Sabha during his long years in public life," Modi said in a post on X.

The prime minister said Patil was passionate about contributing to the welfare of society.

NCP-SCP MP Fauzia Khan on Thursday said in Rajya Sabha that as many as 766 farmers have committed suicide in Maharashtra in the last three months, and questioned when farmers will "become dear to the government".

Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Khan said Maharashtra leads the country in farmer suicides, with the state government informing the Assembly about the 766 deaths in three months.

Of these, 676 families received government aid, while 200 were denied assistance, she said.

Khan said that despite the announcement of a Rs 31,628-crore relief package following heavy rains and widespread floods this year, the ground reality was different.

Congress whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore on Thursday raised the issue of the air quality in Delhi-NCR in the Lok Sabha, and said that it was a “human crisis” damaging the lungs, brains, and hearts of an entire generation. He demanded an immediate, time-bound, Beijing-style clean air emergency plan for the national capital.

Speaking during Zero Hour in the Lower House, Tagore said that the air quality situation in Delhi was “not just an environmental crisis, but is a human crisis”. “Toxic air is damaging the lungs, brains, and hearts of an entire generation. No nation that lets its children choke can call itself developed,” said Tagore.

“Delhi–NCR is breathing toxic, hazardous air. Children are missing school. Workers cannot stand outdoors. Hospitals are overflowing with respiratory and cardiac cases. Sir, people are not just suffering—they are choking,” he added.

Ethanol-blended petrol has greatly benefitted farmers and resulted in saving of over Rs 1.40 lakh crore of foreign exchange, Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday.

Amid concerns over the use of ethanol-blended petrol, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said after extensive testing, no adverse impact has been found in cars where ethanol mixed petrol is used.

"Use of E-20 petrol (Ethanol Blended Petrol) is a healthy trend. It is a green transition. It is less polluted and also saves foreign exchange," he said in Lok Sabha during Question Hour.

Gadkari said due to the mixing of ethanol in petrol, Rs 40,000 crore has been given to the farmers for the raw materials used -- sugarcane, maize etc. -- in ethanol.

BJP MP Anurag Thakur, without naming anyone, flagged an incident of an MP allegedly using an e-cigarette inside the Lok Sabha. Hinting at a Trinamool Congress member, Thakur urged the Chair to take note of the violation.

Speaker Om Birla said there is no rule or precedent allowing any MP to smoke in the House and added, “If such an incident is brought to my notice with clarity, appropriate action will follow.”

TMC MP Sagarika Ghose Thursday raised concerns in Rajya Sabha over the treatment of Bangla-speaking migrants in urban areas, citing cases including that of Sunali Khatun—who was deported to Bangladesh earlier this year along with her 8-year-old son—and Sweety Bibi. Ghose said Khatun was able to return to her home in Birbhum only after the intervention of the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court, and questioned why Delhi Police had acted in “hot haste” to deport a pregnant woman. She told the House that Bangla-speaking migrants face daily harassment in Delhi, Gurgaon and other cities, where they are often labelled “Bangladeshi” despite being Indian citizens, and asked whether there was a political motive behind branding them as infiltrators.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Thursday gave to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh a copy of diary entries in Gujarati of Vallabhbhai Patel's daughter that appeared in a book, and told him that there was no mention in them of his claim that Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to build the Babri masjid using public funds.

Ramesh met Singh as soon as he alighted from his car outside Makar Dwar of Parliament.

Ramesh told Singh that he had especially brought for him Maniben Patel's diary entries in Gujarati, to which the BJP leader responded saying, "we have it in English".

While handing over the papers containing the original diary entries in Gujarati that appeared in a book as well as its Hindi translation, Ramesh told him to read it and Singh, who was heading for the Makar Dwar, replied that he did not know Gujarati.

On the Opposition’s walkout during Amit Shah’s speech in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, BJP MP Dinesh Sharma said, “…They didn’t have the courage to face the truth. They had no answers as Union HM Amit Shah gave pointed replies to all the questions on electoral reforms, SIR, and other issues.”

Criticising Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks, AAP MP Malvinder Kang said, “I was shocked to hear Home Minister Amit Shah say in Parliament that they want to follow the same footsteps that were followed earlier. I believe there should be transparency, a clear system, and genuine election reforms. The Election Commission is an independent body, and its independence must be protected… It would have been much better if all these points had been presented in detail that day. When Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, was speaking, we were also in the House, but I felt his entire speech was very limited. The arguments he kept making in press conferences, if he had made them inside the House, would have been much better.
