‘Had to speak up’: Murlidhar Mohol hits back at Ajit Pawar’s ‘low-level’ attacks ahead of PMC polls

Ajit Pawar had alleged corruption in the PMC when the BJP had control over it and pointed fingers at a team of office bearers, including Murlidhar Mohol, who was then the mayor.

BJP leader and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol, who had been at loggerheads with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in the weeks leading up to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) election, said on Thursday that criticism of him in poor taste had led to the tiff between the two.

“The PMC election was portrayed as Ajit Pawar versus Murlidhar Mohol. Both criticised each other. I never did personal criticism, but I had to speak up when the rivals started saying things about me,” Mohol said after casting his vote in Kothrud.

The BJP and the NCP contested the 2024 state and national elections in a pre-poll alliance. However, the BJP decided to fight the PMC election independently.

Mohol said that he faced “low-level criticism” from the NCP, alleging that the social media team of the party and Ajit Pawar—the guardian minister of Pune—targeted him in poor taste. He added that while rivals had applied all possible means, voters were aware of the situation and would elect only the right candidates to represent them.

“We showcased the work done by us when in power and the development work initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014. Also, the mega development plan made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for Pune,” he pointed out.

Ajit Pawar had publicly criticised the BJP for failing to meet the civic infrastructure demands of Pune citizens, citing the suffering of the public due to poor infrastructure and facilities. He also alleged corruption during the last nine years when the BJP had control over the civic body and pointed fingers at a team of three office bearers, which included Mohol, who was then the mayor of the city.

The NCP chief had also highlighted the issue of increased traffic problems, air, water and river pollution due to poor management by the local BJP, which had control over the civic body for the last few years. He had criticised the BJP for inducting NCP probable candidates in the party ahead of civic polls despite an understanding between the Mahayuti allies.

Pawar also raised the recent controversy over a prime plot of the Jain community being taken up by a real estate developer—Mohol allegedly had a business partnership with him in the past—for redevelopment purposes.

Earlier, Mohol had criticised Pawar for giving candidature to those with criminal records and held the NCP responsible for the civic problems of Pune despite being in power for many years in the past.
