In 2021-22, the number of vacant seats in IITs was 5,296, slightly lower than the previous year. Of them, 361 seats remained vacant in BTech courses, 3,083 in postgraduate courses and 1,852 in PhD courses.

147 posts of faculty are lying vacant in centrally-funded IIITs. As many as 8 posts of chairman at IITs are lying vacant along with 21 posts of chairman at NITs. Further, 5 IITs and 5 National Institute of Technology (NITs) are functioning without directors.
