Akbaruddin Owaisi is the AIMIM floor leader in the Telangana Assembly, and younger brother of AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi. He often attacks the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and in the past has also threatened authors Taslima Nasreen and Salman Rushdie. In 2009, AIMIM workers, alleged to be his supporters, attacked Urdu daily Siasat’s editor Zahid Ali Khan who was in the fray from the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat.
In December 2012, he was accused of delivering hate speeches in Nizamabad and the town of Nirmal. He was arrested in January 2013, first in connection with the Nirmal speech and was later shown as arrested in the second hate speech case too. Akbaruddin spent 40 days in jail before bail was granted. In April 2022, a special sessions court for the trial of MPs and MLAs found the evidence provided by the prosecution insufficient. It gave the AIMIM leader the benefit of the doubt and acquitted him in both cases.
Akbaruddin has been booked by the Hyderabad Police for allegedly threatening a police officer on November 21 during the ongoing campaign for the state assembly elections after the latter asked him to wind up his speech as the 10 pm deadline for campaigning was nearing. Akbaruddin has been booked under various IPC sections. The police complaint stated that Akbaruddin, who is seeking re-election from Chandrayangutta, became aggressive when the police officer approached him with a request to finish his speech as the 10 pm deadline was nearing. Akbarddin said he, too, lodged a complaint against the police for obstructing his speech.
He was born on 14 June 1970. The division of labour among the brothers has been clear.
