It was a double whammy for the RJD-LJP alliance in Bihar on Friday. The first blow: RJD Buxar MP Jagdanand Singh’s son Sudhakar Singh joined the BJP. Second, the entire EBC (extremely backward class) cell of the LJP merged with the JD-U.

For RJD chief Lalu Prasad, the defection was a big embarrassment as Sudhakar was the son of one of his most trusted MPs. Sudhakar’s shift to the BJP dealt a major blow to Lalu’s efforts to retain upper caste votes in Buxar.

The region was earlier dominated by BJP’s Lalmuni Choubey till Jagdanand Singh trounced him in the last Lok Sabha elections. Sudhakar Singh, who joined the BJP in Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi’s presence, dropped enough hints of jumping into the fray. “I joined hands with the BJP because of its development agenda. We have to make sure that Lalu raj of terror does not return to Bihar,” said Sudhakar.

Sometime back,Maharajganj MP Umashankar Singh announced his intention to campaign for the Congress. Former MP Akhilesh Singh also quit the RJD to join the Congress last week.

The JD-U got another fillip with the LJP’s entire EBC cell merging with the party. Welcoming the workers,Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said: “JD-U has been drawing people because it does not carry any family agenda. While some people were worried only about family,JD-U worked for the welfare of the state”.
