In the last four years, 94% of the animals who were impregnated by artificial insemination through Sex-sorted Semen Technology (SST) have given birth to female babies. The state government started implementing the technology from 2022-23 through an initiative. The implementation of artificial insemination has gone up five times in Gujarat and in 2025 one lakh animals have been administered its dose, said an official release from the state government.
The figures are with reference to artificial insemination of cows and buffaloes, as per sources in the department of animal husbandry.
With a view to increase milk production in the state, the government had earlier adopted artificial insemination technology and now with SST the outcome is proving to be further effective as it results in the birth of over 90% female animal babies, the release suggested.
An official release stated, “Earlier, during artificial insemination, frozen semen was being administered following which 50% male and 50% female babies were being born. Now, with artificial insemination through sex-sorted semen 85 to 90% animals are giving birth to female babies.”
The animal husbandry department of Gujarat government had started artificial insemination through sex-sorted semen in 2022. Initially, the government was charging Rs 300 as fee for one dose of sex-sorted semen.
In 2024, the state government has decreased the fees by Rs 250 and one dose is costing Rs 50.
“Because of this, artificial insemination through sex-sorted semen has increased significantly. In 2024-25, 1,30,925 animals and in the current year till October, 1,00,178 animals have been given the dose of sex sorted semen,” a government release stated.
In 2022-23 and 2023-24, total 25746 and 25620 animals were given the dose of sex sorted semen respectively, as per the release.
The release added that out of the total animals who became pregnant through sex-sorted semen, 94% have given birth to female babies, and it is a living example of efficiency of the sex-sorted semen technology.
Citing benefits of wide use of SST, the release said it will result in birth of less male animal babies which will decrease the number of illegal slaughter of animals and the number of stray animals will also go down.
“Additionally, milk production will increase after birth of female babies in a short duration. Income of cattle rearers will increase by selling additional female babies. And the breed of the animals will improve genetically…,” the release added.
As per the release, under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission of the central government, a project worth Rs 47.50 crore has been approved to establish a sex-sorted semen production facility at Frozen Semen Station in Patan. “With the help of it, adequate doses of sex-sorted semen will be available in the state at affordable rates to cattle rearers,” it added.
