Tension erupted in City Kotwali police station area of Gonda district on Wednesday as three shops were torched and vehicles damaged during a clash between members of two communities during a religious procession.
Rioters indulged in brick-batting and pelted the police force with stones when they lathi-charged the mob to control the situation. Heavy police force has been deployed to maintain peace in the area, said Circle Officer, City area, Akhand Pratap Singh.

The incident occurred when people from Bharat Milap crossing were carrying a Ganesha idol for immersion in Ayodhya river in Faizabad. As the procession was passing by Utraula Road, which is a Muslim-dominated area, a stone was hurled at the vehicle carrying the idol. Agitated, the people in the procession retaliated by stone-pelting at shops and houses in the locality, he added.
Soon, people from both the communities engaged in brick-batting. Rioters looted belongings from three shops and later torched the establishments, the CO said. One person was arrested in connection with the incident, added Singh.
