Russia on Sunday welcomed US President Donald Trump administration’s new national security strategy and called the plan largely in line with Moscow’s vision, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in an updated comment published by Russia’s Tass news agency, AP reported.

The 33-page document released by the White House on Friday stated that the US wants to improve its relation with Russia after several years of Moscow being treated as an outcast in the global community and that Europe is facing “civilisational erasure” and doesn’t cast Russia as a threat to the United States.

“There are statements there against confrontation and in favor of dialogue and building good relations,” Peskov said, adding that Russia hopes this understanding would lead to “further constructive cooperation with Washington on the Ukrainian settlement.”

The US report further mentions ending mass migration, rejecting the European Union’s perceived practice of “censorship” and combatting foreign influence as other top priorities. Several EU officials have criticised the report and questioned its focus on freedom of expression and aligned it to language used by the Kremlin.

Kremlin spokesperson Peskov’s comments came as Moscow launched missiles, drones and shelling attacks on Ukraine killing at least four people as US and Ukrainian officials concluded their third day of talks which aims to end the war in Kyiv, AP reported.

The new national security strategy brought in by the United States adopts a softer tone towards Russia which has concerned EU officials as they believe it could weaken their stance towards Moscow as the group focuses to end the four year old war in Ukraine.

The document accuses the European Union for blocking US efforts to end the conflict and says that Washington must “re-establish strategic stability to Russia which would stabilise European economies”.

The report further talks about restoration of “Western identity” and claims that Europe would be unrecognisable in another 20 years or less.
