‘I am living my dream’

Ranbir Kapoor on being a besharam and a star, his parents and other affairs

There may not be a shred of doubt when Bollywood’s trade pundits call him India’s new “acting superstar”. In just 10 films, experimenting with a range of roles,he has impressed his well-wishers,stumped his contemporaries and floored the audience and critics likewise. But Ranbir Kapoor keeps his success at a distance, watching it like a bystander. “I am living my dream because I am hungry and ambitious. But at the same time,I’m content, and believe that humility is the greatest virtue of an actor, something I’ve seen in Amitabh Bachchan,” says the actor, over the phone.

The latest to hit the theatres on October 2 is Abhinav Singh Kashyap’s Besharam in which he plays the flamboyant Babli. “It’s a family entertainer, with action, comedy and romance,” says Kapoor. He’s a car thief with a heart of gold who feeds orphans and is a fan of Bachchan. For Kapoor, this was a difficult role. “It was outlandish, external, and outrageous — be it his walk, talk or clothes. Everything about Babli is out there, whereas I’m am shy,and an introvert,” he says.

Kapoor has already proved that he’s a badtameez,is he besharam too? “I guess so,I did drop by towel in my first film Saawariya,” he says with a laugh. It’s a film that also brings the Kapoor family together on screen for the first time as Rishi and Neetu are a part of the film too. “The good thing was that they are not playing my parents in the film. I am a thief and they are cops, and I enjoyed the dynamics of our relationship,” says Kapoor.

He also enjoyed the company of his parents on the sets. “My mother is such a pleasant and caring person on the sets. My father,on the other hand,is my favourite actor, and I am impressed with the way he pushes the boundaries and has proved that stars may fade but good actors always shine,” says Kapoor. Talking about other “affairs”,he says rumour mills are part and parcel of showbiz. “I’m not angered by gossip about me. Media is doing its job,and like the rest of the country,I too love reading gossip,” he says. He is currently working on three projects: a children’s musical detective story Jagga Jasoos, which is also being produced by him; Anurag Kashyap’s crime-drama Bombay Velvet,in which he plays a boxer; and a love story with Imtiaz Ali.
