Krishnanagar Lok Sabha Constituency: Krishnanagar is one of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies of West Bengal established during the fourth Lok Sabha elections in 1967. The constituency is comprised of seven Vidhan Sabha constituencies, including Tehatta, Palashipara, Kaliganj, Nakashipara, Chapra, Krishnanagar Uttar and Krishnanagar Dakshin, and covers the entire area of Nadia district.

Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency has been a stronghold of the Communist Party of India, winning 9 of the 13 Lok Sabha elections from this seat. BJP’s sole victory on this came in 1999, while the Indian National Congress has never won the Lok Sabha elections from Krishnanagar. However, in recent times, TMC has made this seat their own stronghold by winning the last three Lok Sabha elections in 2009, 2014 and 2019.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Krishnanagar will go for the polling in phase 4 on Monday, May 13. The MP sitting in this seat, Mahua Moitra, will once again be representing TMC, while Amrita Roy will be representing the BJP. For the I.N.D.I.A. alliance, SM Saadi of CPI (M) will be contesting the election.

TMC, despite being part of the I.N.D.I.A. alliance, decided to contest on all the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. They have once again fielded their popular leader and the sitting MP, Mahua Moitra, from this seat despite her controversial disqualification as an MP in 2023. Notably, the 17th Lok Sabha disciplinary committee decided to disqualify Mahua from Lok Sabha after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey alleged that Mahua had released the confidential information of the Indian Parliament to a third party. Mahua refuted the allegations and referred to her disqualification process as a fixed match.

Amrita Roy (BJP)

In their bid to repeat the 1999 success, the BJP has fielded the queen mother of Rajbari of Krishnanagar, Amrita Rao, as their Lok Sabha candidate from the Krishnanagar seat. Amrita Rao is the direct descendent of the famous 18th-century king of Bengal, Raja Krishna Chandra Dev. This will be her first time contesting any elections. She joined the BJP on March 20 this year.

SM Saadi (CPI(M))

As a representative of I.N.D.I.A alliance, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has fielded SM Saadi as their candidate from the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency.
