‘I am not joking, there are methods’: Trump says he’s considering ways to serve 3rd term as US president

When asked if there were strategies in the administration to allow him to seek a third term, Trump responded saying “There are methods which you could do.”

The president was asked if he would want to continue for a third term, he said “I like working, I’m not joking,” Trump said, when asked to clarify. “But I’m not, it is far too early to think about it.”

The 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution, ratified in 1952, states that “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

In order for the Trump administration to amend the US Constitution and abolish the two-term limit for the presidential role, a two-thirds vote of the Congress would be required or two thirds of the states would be required to demand a constitutional convention to propose changes.

President Trump highlighted the election results of November and said that it seems “a lot of people would like me to” hold office for a third term.

A CNN report quoted an outside Trump ally Steve Bannon who claimed that the Republican president was eligible for the third term since the amendment doesn’t specify “consecutive” terms.
