Georgia high school shooting: 4 casualties reported, suspect now in custody

In a tragic mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, a gunman opened fire, resulting in multiple casualties. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that four people were killed, while nine others sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals. The suspect, now in custody, is believed to be a 14-year-old male, according to a law enforcement source cited by CNN.

According to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and medical services were rushed to the Apalachee High School after receiving information about an active shooting incident at around 10:23 am.

The sheriff’s office said, “Casualties have been reported and one suspect is in custody,” according to NBC News.

Governor of Georgia Brian Kemp detailed about the aid being provided by the authorities, and posted on X, “I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.”

Apalachee High School, where the shooting took place, has been put under lockdown and school children were safely evacuated to a designated safe zone.

Over dozens of police officers have surrounded the school which has approximately 1,900 students in total. As per a report in ABC News, the shooting incident is supposedly over and a local hospital is treating victims with multiple gunshot injuries.

President Joe Biden has been briefed regarding the active shooting in the Georgia school by his Homeland Security adviser, Liz Sherwood-Randall.

The White House, in a statement said, “The administration will continue coordinating with federal, state, and local officials as we receive more information,” as quoted by CNN.

There are not many details available regarding the suspect who has been taken into custody by the police.
