Emergency workers search for victims of the Russian rocket attack that damaged a multi-storey building in central Kharkiv, Oct. 6, 2023. (Ukrainian Police Press Office via AP) At least 53 people were killed and several injured in two separate Russian missile strikes in Ukraine on Thursday and Friday, according to media reports quoting Ukrainian officials. The drone strikes targetted a number of cities across the war-torn country — Odesa and Mykolaiv regions in the south, Dnipropetrovsk region in the southeast, Cherkasy and Zhytomyr regions in the centre and Kharkiv region in the northeast.
The Ukrainian Air Force, in a statement, said that it had shot down 25 of 33 drones launched by Russia from the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. World leaders, including the US President’s Office and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, condemned the attack, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the Hroza attack as “a demonstrably brutal Russian crime.”
A 10-year-old boy in Kharkiv is among those killed in today's missile strike by Moscow, Ukrainian officials said. In addition to the boy, 16 others, including an 11-month-old baby, were injured, as per reports. Several houses and cars were damaged as well, said Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Synehubov.

The missile hit the building at around 1.15 pm, and razed it to the ground, as per a report in The Guardian. Moscow is yet to comment on the strikes.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the Hroza attack as "a demonstrably brutal Russian crime – a rocket attack on an ordinary grocery store, a completely deliberate act of terrorism. My condolences to all those who have lost loved ones."
"Russian terror must be stopped. All those who help Russia circumvent sanctions are criminals. Those who continue to support Russia are all supporting evil. Russia needs this and similar terrorist attacks for one reason only: to make its genocidal aggression the new normal for the entire world," he added in a Twitter post.

Several countries condemned the most recent attacks on Ukraine, calling attention to the killing of innocent civilians.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who met with Zelenskyy at a summit of the European Political Community in Spain earlier this week, termed it "horrific". "We discussed this horrific attack that has just happened. It just illustrates Russia's barbarity," Sunak said, adding, "(Russian) President Putin can say all he likes. There is one person responsible for this illegal unprovoked war, and it is him ... That's why the UK has been steadfast in supporting Ukraine and will continue to do so."
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Joe Biden will have another aid package for Ukraine soon. "We’re going to continue to make sure that we meet the battlefield needs that Ukraine has using existing authorities, using those resources provided by Congress," she said.
Today's Russian attack in Odesa has damaged, among other facilities, a grain silo in the Izmail district of the region, regional governor Oleh Kiper said, as per a Reuters report.
He said that though nine trucks caught fire, they were extinguished quickly. "The air alert in Odesa lasted for three-and-a-half hours," Kiper said. "The enemy once again targeted the border and port infrastructure of the Izmail district."
