A Delta Air Lines flight returned to Atlanta soon after taking off as crew members reported smoke inside the cockpit, according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials.

The Delta Air Lines flight 876 which took off from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in US’ Atlanta was headed to South Carolina’s Columbia Metropolitan Airport before the crew reported a “possible smoke” in the cabin.

The flight had returned safely to Atlanta international airport and all passengers were evacuated, the FAA officials said.

Delta Air Lines in a statement said that a Boeing 717 flight departed from Atlanta on Monday morning with 94 passengers onboard “when a haze inside the aircraft was observed”.

The statement added that the pilot declared an emergency as soon as the crew informed about smoke in order to get priority handling from air traffic controllers.

An AP report stated that as soon as the plane landed, slides were deployed by the airport first responders in order for the public to exit immediately. Delta spokesperson Samantha Moore Facteau told AP that “EMTs attended to two customers.”

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people and we apologize to our customers for the experience,” Delta Air Lines statement added.

Videos on social media showed smoke filled in the cabin of the Delta Air Lines flight and passengers covering their mouth and noses to protect themselves.

This comes two days after a Delta Air Lines flight bound for Australia returned to Los Angeles International Airport “after smoke was detected in the galley,” reported NBC News.
