(Representational Image)Some people will do anything for love—flowers, romantic dinners, even moving across the world. But one man in China took devotion to a whole new (and painful) level when he agreed to a three-hour labour pain simulation at his girlfriend’s request—only to end up in hospital with part of his small intestine removed.
According to news outlet NetEase News, the woman from Henan province wanted to “test” her boyfriend before marriage, believing he should experience the challenges women face. Her mother and sister reportedly backed the idea, insisting it would ensure he treated his future wife better, a report in South China Morning Post has claimed. .
Initially hesitant, the boyfriend eventually gave in. The experience involved electric currents stimulating the skin and muscles to mimic the pain of uterine contractions.
The woman later described the ordeal on social media:
“My boyfriend started screaming and struggling at level 8, swearing and crying at level 10, and by the end, he was gasping for air. My sister and I kept wiping his sweat.”
After the simulation, he was drenched in sweat, exhausted, and suffering from abdominal pain and vomiting. A week later, his condition worsened, and doctors discovered part of his small intestine had been irreversibly damaged, requiring surgery.
The woman revealed that her boyfriend’s mother had banned her from visiting him in hospital, cancelled the engagement, and was considering legal action.
“I was told my boyfriend had part of his small intestine removed. I am willing to take full responsibility as long as he recovers,” she wrote.
A lawyer stated that if medical reports confirm the injury was caused by the simulation, the woman could be financially liable for medical and rehabilitation costs, a report in South China Morning Post has claimed.
The bizarre case has sparked debate online, with many questioning the necessity—and sanity—of such a “test.”
“True love does not need testing. Time will prove everything,” one person commented.
Another added: “The pain women endure during childbirth is a complex mix of physical and emotional reactions that cannot be truly simulated.”
Some criticised the woman’s actions directly: “Many women now choose painless labour. This was cruel, and she should face legal consequences.”
Others, however, pointed out the boyfriend did agree to the experiment—though whether he expected to lose part of his intestine remains unknown.
Love hurts, they say. But for this man, it turned out to be quite literal.
