The accused arrested for the murder of Maharashtra Congress vice-president Hidayat Patel in Akola on January 6 told police that the trigger behind the crime was the politician’s opposition to his relationship with a woman.

According to police, the arrested accused Ubed Patel told them that the woman belonged to the Patel community and Hidayat, an influential person in the community, opposed it due to which the couple couldn’t get married. Police are verifying these claims.

Police also found that the knife used by Ubed for the crime was purchased from a shop near Charminar in Hyderabad a few months ago. “It is not clear whether he purchased the knife with the intention of murdering Hidayat. We are questioning him to get further clarity,” an officer said.

Soon after he was arrested from a jungle in Akot where he fled after the murder, Ubed told police that his family and Hidayat’s family were rivals. He told police that Hidayat ensured Ubed’s family did not progress and also ensured they could not develop some properties they owned in the area.

“While there had been rivalry between the two families for long, he had been upset that his relationship had to end because of Hidayat and hence decided to get rid of him,” the officer said.

After being stabbed, Hidayat managed to walk by himself and was taken to the local hospital. However, later his condition deteriorated and a green corridor was set up to take him to Akola, an officer said. During treatment, he suffered a minor heart attack and passed away Wednesday morning, an officer added.
