This video is not an easy one to watch! (Source: NatGeoChannel/Twitter)
We’re used to seeing all sort of drama when it comes to our daily dose of soaps on television’s many general entertainment channels, but if you’re tuned in to the National Geographic Channel, then a love triangle that’s pulsating with drama, jealousy and fight is hardly something you’d expect.
But then, you probably haven’t seen this clipping that the Nat Geo Channel tweeted out, with the title “Animal Fight Night: Homewrecking Penguin”. The almost 3-minute long video starts off like any other documentary on penguins and their nesting habit. But not even 20 seconds into the clip, a penguin who has just returned from the waters walks in to find his ‘wife’ with another penguin.
“He flips out. His strategy is simple – batter the homewrecker until he flees,” says the anchor describing the vicious fight that has started between the two male penguins on screen. This fight – which soon turns quite bloody – has taken Twitter by storm, with the clip having been retweeted over 200,000 times and liked even more, at the time of writing.
Explaining the reason why the fight would hurt both concerned, the anchor explains how birds usually have hollow bones for flying, but since penguins don’t fly, their flippers contain solid bone, so each hit carries with it a solid punch – delivering up to eight blows a second! This is probably the most dramatic way to learn about the anatomy of a penguin.
Soon, the two lovers call out to the female penguin to have her choose. (Have you started biting your nails yet?)
To find out whom she chooses, watch the video:

The ‘husband’ is one fierce penguin, there is no doubt about that.
Reactions and comments to the video range from those who are appalled and heartbroken to those drawing parallels to human life. Sample these:
The one that pained me pass is that he fought for her a second time, and she still chose the other guy. What is this life really? pic.twitter.com/PLdCMuGx2d
