In a bid to mitigate the growing concern of air pollution in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a five-day drive to wash the surface of all major roads across the city. Civic officials said the move aims to minimise dust displacement during peak traffic hours.

According to data furnished by the authorities, the BMC has so far washed 676 roads, covering 1,888 km, which amounts to around 92 per cent of Mumbai’s total road length. In addition, the corporation has removed 665 metric tonnes (MT) of garbage from public spaces, along with 18 MT of construction debris.

“In a daily basis around 300 KMs of roads are being washed by us. Most of these include arterial roads, bridges and highways that are close to construction on infrastructure sites. These roads are washed using non-potable recycled water that is supplied to us through tankers,” said an official.

Civic officials added that several roads are washed multiple times a day, implying that the total stretch cleaned is higher than the figures presented.

“For example, the portion of the Eastern and Western Express Highways are being washed twice a day so it clearly shows that we are cleaning the same stretch which in return increases the total stretch of roads washed regularly,” the official said.

Along with tanker-supplied water, the BMC is also using mist spray vans and fogging machines for road washing. The authorities said they have deployed around 14,000 sanitation workers, 300 water tankers and 120 misting vehicles for the drive.

Meanwhile, Mumbai recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 129 on the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) dashboard categorised as ‘moderate’. Of the 28 monitoring stations operational in the city, 24 reported moderate readings, while four recorded satisfactory air quality.
