Mahayuti VS MVA: The Maharashtra local body elections have shaped up as a contest between the ruling Mahayuti and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The Mahayuti, which governs the state, includes the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party. The MVA comprises the Congress, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP), along with other partners. Several other national and regional parties are also in the fray, including the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, which has formed local alliances with some MVA partners in select constituencies.
SEC flags duplicate voters, tightens checks as local body polls begin: The State Election Commission has introduced a new system to mark suspected duplicate voters with “double stars” on electoral rolls, requiring stricter identity checks at polling stations amid opposition concerns over bogus entries. The polls are also the first to be held after the Supreme Court allowed 27% OBC reservation—while capping total quotas at 50%—and come alongside the launch of an SEC mobile app offering candidate details and affidavits.
