When one thinks of washing utensils, a bar of dish soap as a cleaning agent is the usual choice. A video that shows a group of men cleaning plates with dry mud is going viral. In the undated video, which appears to have been taken at a public event, the men first rub the plates with mud and before rinsing them with water.

This video was shared by Twitter user Kelab Stan Menantu Siti (@IniAlalalannn) on May 5. It has gathered thousands of views so far. The video’s caption, translated to English from Malay, read, “First time seeing how to wash dishes during a party like this.. But it works.. it’s easy to remove the oil from the dishes..”.

While many expressed disgust and even unease with this cleaning process, some noted that washing with abrasive agents like charcoal and coarse mud or sand helps in scrapping away food particles and oil from plates. Although it is still unclear how effective natural cleaning agents are against bacteria or viruses.

A Twitter user also shared a black-and-white photo that showed a group of boys cleaning a stack of plates with mud. While sharing this photo, the Twitter user gave an explanation, which roughly translated to English from Malay, saying, “In the past, a feast like this even washed the dishes. I use wood dust. Btw, this is a picture of my grandmother’s album from the time of her wedding. Maybe around 60 or 70 something like that.”
