The popular X (formerly Twitter) account Now This posted a video showing the wide array of items that would be on the menu for the schoolchildren. A journalist tried the “healthier, scratch-cooked menu items” coming to New York City public schools such as kachumber salad, kidney bean rajma, chicken dumplings, vegan teriyaki nuggets, jollof cauliflower, black bean taco, jerk chicken and pineapple fried rice.
If you are wondering how this idea came to be, the city last year launched the Chefs in the Schools programme, which brings scratch-cooking and healthier food options to students. The programme is a partnership with the New York City Department of Education’s Office of Food and Nutrition Services and the Mayor’s Office of Food Policy.
“Gourmet-looking lunches are coming to New York City public schools—here’s a preview of what kids can expect,” says the caption of the video.

The journalist was invited to try the menu that was being prepared by eight chefs in the test kitchen. She said she loved jollof cauliflower the most. She was impressed by the level of thought and effort that went into the food that students will be eating in the future. She added that she had hated school lunch as a kid and felt happy with how things are changing.
