‘History will remember you’: Former J-K Guv Satya Pal Malik joins Wrestlers protest at Jantar Mantar

Former J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik extended his support to wrestlers protesting against wrestling body chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over charges of sexual harassment,

Malik joined the wrestlers protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Wednesday.

“The support needs to grow, and I will personally do my part to grow it, because this fight is not just theirs – it is for all women in our country,” he told reporters.

“I want to tell these young women to be patient, because you will be successful. The entire country is behind you. History will remember you for ending corruption in the field of wrestling,” he added.

“When the farmers unions held protests a few months ago, they were able to get the PM to apologise. Now that they are behind you, there is no question, you will be successful.”

Earlier, on Tuesday, the country’s top wrestlers including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat said that threats of dire consequences and inducements of money were being made to the seven woman wrestlers who filed separate complaints of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation against Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, also a BJP Member of Parliament from Kaiserganj.

On the third day of the protest, two-time World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat said threats were being made to ‘break the resolve’ of the complainants. Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia accused Singh’s coterie of threatening the family of the minor, one of the seven complainants.

Meanwhile, the wrestlers had sought the support of political parties and women’s organisations on Monday in a departure from their earlier stand. Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Communist Party of India leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat and Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Reena Gupta were among those who met the wrestlers on Tuesday.
