A retired Indian Air Force personnel has been arrested in Assam’s Tezpur for allegedly establishing links with Pakistani intelligence operatives and sharing defence-related documents with them.

Police said the suspect, Kulendra Sharma, who retired as a junior warrant officer with the Indian Air Force in 2002, was arrested on charges including acts endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India, waging war against the Government of India, criminal conspiracy, and causing disappearance of evidence of offence.

“We have received information from a reliable source that Kulendra Sharma was establishing links with Pakistani intelligence operatives, so we arrested him and the investigation is on. According to the preliminary investigation, we found that some documents were being shared with some unknown persons. We are verifying their originality,” said Additional Superintendent of Police, Sonitpur, Haricharan Bhumij, adding that the documents in question are defence-related.

He said police seized a laptop and a mobile phone from Sharma.

“The devices will be sent for forensic examination and we expect to get further information from that. We found that some highly confidential information had been shared. We are ascertaining who he was sharing the information with and the originality of the documents,” he said.

The arrest comes after Arunachal Pradesh Police also arrested four suspected spies, all from Kashmir’s Kupwara, who police said were allegedly sharing security-related information — including the deployment and movement of Indian armed forces — with Pakistani handlers through a Telegram channel. The arrests were made from different parts of the state, including the capital Itanagar, West Siang district and Changlang district.
