The Commission for Air Quality Management’s (CAQM) Sub-Committee Saturday imposed measures under Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) stage IV in Delhi and nearby regions amid worsening air quality in the capital. The GRAP IV measures have been imposed with immediate effect as the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi slips in the ‘severe plus’ category.

The AQI in Delhi was recorded at 478 at around 7 pm on Saturday, according to the data released by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Stage IV of GRAP is implemented when the air quality index in Delhi breaches the 450-mark.

The 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) stood at 431, according to the CPCB, while the Air Quality Early Warning System predicted the AQI to remain ‘severe’ on Sunday as well. Among the Delhi-NCR cities, Delhi’s AQI was the third worst after Noida at 455 and Greater Noida at 442, reflecting severe air pollution across the region.

According to the Decision Support System for Air Quality Management, Delhi’s pollution load was led by the transport sector, which contributed 14.2 per cent, followed by Delhi and peripheral industries at 6.8 per cent. Construction activities accounted for 1.8 per cent, while residential sources contributed 3.6 per cent.

GRAP Stage IV is the highest level of restrictions imposed to curb pollution in the capital. The restrictions under Stage IV come in addition to the measures imposed in Delhi under Stages I, II and III of the action plan.

Among the monitoring stations recorded in the morning hours, 21 were in the ‘severe’ category with AQI readings of above 400, according to the CPCB.

Issuing guidelines, CAQM advised children, elderly citizens and those with chronic diseases to avoid stepping outside. The management also advised people to wear masks whenever stepping out.

In its official notice, the management also said that under GRAP IV, the entry of truck traffic into Delhi will also be restricted to curb pollution caused by vehicular movement, if the AQI worsens further.
