Mumbai wakes up to chilly morning as temperature drops to 14.9 degrees

Temperature levels continued to dip in the city on Friday with the suburban station in Santacruz logging a minimum temperature of 14.9 degrees, making it Mumbai’s second coldest December night in the past seven years. However, the India Meteorological Department said the day and night time temperatures are expected to escalate over the upcoming week, bringing an end to the current cold spell.

Records furnished by the IMD showed that on Friday morning, Mumbai woke up to chill in the air as mercury levels dropped to 14.9 degrees–which is 3.6 degrees below the normal–while the Colaba coastal observatory logged a minimum temperature of 20.6 degrees. At 14.9 degrees, Friday was Mumbai’s second coldest December night since 2018, with the record for the coldest day in the years logged at 13.7 degrees in 2024. Prior to this, the record for the coldest day was logged at 14.4 degrees in 2018. For the record, the all-time record for the coldest day was recorded at 10.6 degrees in 1949. Even as the night temperatures dipped below the normal, the city sweltered during the day as the maximum temperatures hovered around 32.5 degrees in the suburbs and 33 degrees in the island city division.

Weather observers attributed the current cold spell to the influx of northerly winds, which ushered in cold and dry winds from the northern parts of the country. With the change in wind direction, however, temperatures are expected to soar in the coming days.

According to the IMD forecasts, while temperatures will oscillate between 15 to 16 degrees in the suburbs until Saturday (December 13), the temperatures are likely to soar over 18 degrees from Sunday. Meanwhile, maximum temperatures are expected to hover above 33 degrees during the period.
