  • The women8217;s 4215;100 metres freestyle relay world record too was erased, but this time by the US team. The team of Amy Van Dyken, Dara Torres, Courtney Shealy and Jenny Thompson clocked 3:36.61 minutes to pocket the gold and also beat the record of 3:37.91 set by China in Rome in 1994.

    Swimming8217;s super kid Ian Thorpe set the world record breaking trend at the Games by erasing two marks at the pool. Thorpe broke the 400m freestyle record and was also part of the Australian men8217;s 4x100m freestyle relay team which clocked 3:13.67 minutes to beat the mark of 3:15.11 set in Atlanta by the Americans. The other members of the team were Michael Klim, Chris Fydler and Ashley Callus.

  • Day one also saw the birth on another world record in the women8217;s section. Ukrainian Yana Klochkova won the 400m individual medley with a time of 4:33.59 minutes.
  • Triple gold medallist Kim Soo-Nyung launched her Olympic comeback by leading South Korea8217;s women archers to a combined team score world record, putting them on target for gold. Compatriot Kim Nam-Soon scored 662, with Yun Mi-Jin shooting 661, to give Korea a combined team score of 1,994, beating the previous mark of 1,984, also set by South Korea at Atlanta in 1996.
  • The Turks flexed their muscles at the weightlifting arean on the very first day of the competition. Halil Mutlu set a new world record in the snatch event of the 56 kg division men8217;s competition. The Turkish star lifted 138 kg to break his own record set in Athens last year of 137.5 kg.
