
Romanian Federation faces financial crisis
BUCHAREST: The Romanian Soccer Federation has only has a fraction of the 700,000 it needs to send its team to the World Cup, the daily Evenimentul Zilei reported. The Romanian Football Federation announced at a meeting on Thursday that it had only 200,000 dollars in its bank accounts.
The Federation said it hopes to get the remaining money from Adidas, which sponsors the national side, and a loan from the Romanian Foreign Trade Bank, whose director is a soccer aficionado.
Radebe impresses Protea coach
JOHANNESBURG: Leeds United defender Lucas Radebe has good qualities to be South Africa8217;s captain at the World Cup in France, new coach Phillipe Troussier said. Speaking to journalists after the end of a training camp for locally-based players, Troussier said Radebe, Bolton Wanderers defender Mark Fish and Ajax Amsterdam striker Benedict McCarthy have impressed him as he surveys talent for the World Cup.
Troussier said he planned tochoose 15 of the 40 players from the camp that ended Friday and 15 players from another camp of foreign-based players in Zurich, Switzerland, this weekend as a preliminary side for an exhibition match against Zambia next month. Then he would pare the side down to 26 players for further training and exhibition matches before settling on the 22 for the World Cup.
Marcelo Salas prefers to keep mum
SANTIAGO: Chilean star striker Marcelo Salas would not comment on criticism of him by Diego Maradona. 8220;I have nothing to say about Maradona,8221; Salas told reporters. 8220;I don8217;t like to talk about people, especially people who are no longer active in soccer.8221;
Maradona, the retired Argentine star, said Salas has been playing poorly for his side River Plate of Argentina, because has been spoiled by his multi-million dollar transfer to Lazio of Italy.
