The website to facilitate online application to junior colleges will soon handle administrative work as well. Mumbai region deputy director of education Sheila Tiwari said at a workshop on 8216;Gyaanmarg-Technology for Inclusive Education8217; at the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute VJTI on Tuesday that the upgraded website would help in streamlining administrative procedures like approval of staff members for colleges. It will also help in developing baseline information, hosting government circulars and also keep tab of grant disbursement to schools and educational institutions.

8220;Our idea is to provide fast communication channels between our stakeholders and us including school authorities, students and parents. Making these services available on the website will ensure that the information reaches even the remotest areas,8221; said Tiwari

Besides, plan to start online admissions to junior colleges is also on the anvil. Tiwari also said that there were plans to start 8216;e-clubs8217; for students and online teachers8217; training programmes on the website.

Also present at the seminar were Dr DB Phatak head, Kanwal Rekhi School of Information at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay IITB who elaborated on Eklavya 8212; an Open Source Project for engineering colleges and students at the IIT-B. Dr Phatak said, 8220;Our e-outreach programme is a partial solution to solve India8217;s education problems. We plan to expand to our project to include schools and other colleges as well. It is the poor and deprived who need cutting edge technology the most.8221;
