Visva-Bharati student forced to lick urine

The hostel warden of Santiniketan-based Visva-Bharati Universitys oldest school,Patha Bhavana,allegedly forced an 11-year-old Class V student to lick urine for wetting her bed on Saturday morning.

The hostel warden of Santiniketan-based Visva-Bharati Universitys oldest school,Patha Bhavana,allegedly forced an 11-year-old Class V student to lick urine for wetting her bed on Saturday morning. The warden,Uma Poddar,is absconding.

The girl from Bolpur,has been staying in Karabi hostel of Patha Bhavana from Class II. Her roommates said she was bright in her studies,but had the problem of bedwetting or urinary incontinence.

Just before dawn on Saturday,they reportedly called the warden after finding that she has wet the bed. Poddar came to the room and forced her to lick urine from the bedclothes as punishment,despite protests,sources said.

Her father lodged a complaint with Bolpur police station alleging that she was forced to drink urine that was squeezed into her mouth from the wet bedsheet by the warden of Karabi girls hostel. Following the incident,the girl fell unconscious,sources said.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has decided to send a showcause notice,seeking explanation from the university. Visva-Bharati sources said a four-member committee has been constituted to look into the matter.
