In yet another reprieve to BJP MP Varun Gandhi,a Pilibhit court on Friday acquitted him in a case of attempt to murder which was registered when rioting broke out after his arrest in a case of making alleged hate speeches during the 2009 Lok Sabha election campaign.
District Government Counsel Abhay Saxena said the District and Session Court of Vinod Kumar Misra acquitted Varun giving him the benefit of the doubt. In all,39 prosecution witnesses were produced before the court. All witnesses turned hostile,said Saxena.
According to prosecution,on March 17 and 18,2009 two cases against Varun were registered at Barkhera and Kotwali police station,respectively,on the charges of making inflammatory speeches. On March 28,Varun surrendered in these cases. While he was being taken to jail,his supporters attacked the police. Varun was accused of instigating them. This was the last case pending against Varun in Pilibhit. He has already been acquitted in both hate speech cases.
