UP ungovernable,needs reorganisation: Jairam

Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday said the long overdue reorganisation of Uttar Pradesh

Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday said the long overdue reorganisation of Uttar Pradesh was a priority from the administrative point of view since the state has become ungovernable in its current form.

A state of over 200 million people,72 districts, over 800 blocks. Its just not governable, the senior Congress leader said, adding that it was his personal view. There is simply no administrative stability in UP. The size of the state and the administrative and political interference are destroying it, Ramesh said and pointed out that all big states like Madhya Pradesh,Bihar and now Andhra Pradesh have been reorganised.

He said if there was a debate on state reorganisation, priority should be given to UP. The issue of UPs bifurcation was also a part of the Congress manifesto for the 2012 Assembly elections in the state.
