Barely three hours after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urged the J-K government to provide security to its policemen and their families so that they are not demoralised,unidentified gunmen stormed the guard post of a politician in north Kashmir Sopore town and killed three policemen.
The policemen were standing guard at the house of Mohammad Abdullah Dar,who unsuccessfully contested the Assembly election in 2008 from Sopore on a Democratic Nationalist Party DNP ticket.
Sources said a group of heavily armed militants barged into Dars house at Yaseen Colony in Arampora area around 9.30 pm on Tuesday,and attacked the security guards. While Dar was away,his family members who were at home escaped unhurt.
In the gunfight,three policemen guarding the residence were killed, Superintendent of Police,Sopore,Altaf Khan,said. The exchange of fire continued for almost 15 minutes. A fourth Special Police Officer SPO posted at Dars residence was on leave at the time of the attack.
The three slain policemen have been identified as Farooq Ahmad Kuchay of Ranipora Shangus Anantnag,Abdul Majeed Ganie of Pattan Baramulla and Shabir Ahmad Lone of Rajpora Sopore.
