US national’s iPhone 14 Pro snatched in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, accused nabbed in 72 hours

Police said the accused, a history sheeter, was nabbed from GB Road while planning another crime

DelhiUnder Operation Kavach 12, Delhi Police intensified Republic Day security, cracking down on drugs, bootlegging, illegal arms and organised crime, with multiple arrests and seizures across the city.

Delhi Police Wednesday claimed to have solved a mobile snatching case involving a United States citizen within 72 hours of the incident, leading to the arrest of a history-sheeter and the recovery of the stolen mobile phone.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia said the swift action by a team from Kotwali police station helped crack another snatching case in the Old Delhi area.

The incident occurred during the late night hours of January 15, when a 37-year-old US citizen, visiting the Chandni Chowk area for shopping, was robbed of his mobile phone by a snatcher on a scooter near Omaxe Mall.

Following the complaint, a case was registered at Kotwali police station and investigation was initiated immediately.

Considering the sensitivity of the case involving a foreign national, a special police team under the leadership of Inspector Gyan Prakash, and supervised by Inspector Suman Kumar and under the guidance of ACP Shankar Banerjee, conducted an extensive investigation, examining footage from over 50 CCTV cameras installed in and around the Chandni Chowk area.

Police said through CCTV analysis and inputs from local intelligence sources, the team identified the accused as Tausif alias Toshif (33), a resident of Gali Sakko Wali, Ajmeri Gate, Delhi — a known history-sheeter of Kamla Market police station.

Multiple raids were conducted at suspected hideouts, and the accused was apprehended in the early hours of January 19 from GB Road while he was allegedly planning another crime.

Police said during questioning, the accused admitted to the snatching incident and led the police to his residence where the stolen Apple iPhone 14 Pro was recovered. The Honda Activa scooter used in the crime, along with the clothes and shoes worn during the offence, were also seized.

Police said Tausif further admitted to his involvement in another mobile snatching case near Old Delhi Railway Station on January 12, corresponding to an e-FIR registered at Lahori Gate police station.

The accused, a school dropout with a criminal history spanning over 15 years, has previously been involved in at least 10 cases of robbery and snatching.
