Clark Kent quits the Daily Planet in protest over the state of journalism

After decades of upholding truth, justice and the American way in print via his alter ego Clark Kent,Superman has finally had enough. He is going to speak truth to power on the Web instead,as a lone warrior, setting up something resembling The Huffington Post or Drudge Report rather than get assignments or draw a paycheck from someone, according to Scott Lobdell, the writer behind this storyline.

Kent has left Daily Planet in the past. He had a short spell as a news anchor when the paper was bought by a broadcasting company. But he returned to the fold shortly after. Those hoping for a similar outcome this time around are, however, likely to be disappointed, since this is the first time Kent has resigned over a principled stand, bemoaning that hard news has given way to too much celebrity-driven reportage. Who wouldve dreamt that Kim Kardashian would be Clark Kents kryptonite? Certainly not Lex Luthor,Supermans eternal nemesis all those years of trying to take over the world, and all he had to do was buy the Daily Planet and turn it into a tabloid.

While fans will no doubt struggle to replace the image of the mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent with a mild-mannered blogger, the Daily Planet is unlikely to be too upset. Given that Kent,in his primary identity as Superman,is so often preoccupied with saving the world,he probably doesnt file many stories. From his editors perspective,Kent must be a rather unreliable employee; he keeps disappearing for hours and is never around when a good story breaks. Perhaps its just as well Superman quit his day job,for surely the good citizens of Metropolis would be better served by a journalist who actually reports stories.
