Shukla has surgery,’critical but stable’

Former Union minister V C Shukla,injured in the Sukma attack,was operated on for multiple pellet wounds at Medanta Medicity Hospital in Gurgaon on Sunday. His vitals are stable,doctors said.

Shukla,84,was airlifted from Jadgalpur and brought to Medanta at 8.15 am. Doctors said he had multiple pellet injuries in the chest,abdomen and thigh. The surgery took two hours till noon and he was then shifted to intensive care.

A Medanta medical bulletin said Shukla was flown in with gunshot injuries and treated by a multidisciplinary team of doctors — orthopaedicians,gastrointestinal specialist,chest specialist — and his condition was “critical but stable”.

Doctors said Shukla’s wife and grandchildren were with him. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,Sonia Gandhi,L K Advani,M S Bitta,Margaret Alva,Kapil Sibal Rajnath Singh,and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda were among those who visited the hospital. “Doctors told me that Shuklaji is stable,” Advani said. “I am relieved. I met his family members too. We should make a concerted effort to combat this menace.”
