Gujarat power generation to hit 20,000 MW by 2012.

Gujarat which is ramping up its power generation capacity would soon become nation’s energy hub,state’s Energy minister Saurabh Patel said here today.

Talking to reporters,the minister said that the state will become nation’s energy hub soon with the power generation hitting the 20,000 MW mark by 2012.

Gujarat is far ahead of other states in power generation and it is the only state to provide 24 hours of power to domestic consumers as also for industry and agriculture.

The minister said the government has chalked out a programme to set up more number of sub-stations to improve the quality of power supply. While last year,the energy department set up 60 sub stations ,this year it would set up nearly 150 sub-stations of which 65 will be in Saurashtra.

Patel also informed that the state government has decided to provide electricity to Below Poverty Line (BPL) card holder at cheaper rates.

The BPL card holders would be given electricity at Rs 1.50 per unit and maximum of 30 units would be given per month.
