PM plays down Brahmaputra row

He said it was a run-of-the-river project and seeking to put to rest the controversy said unnecessary provocation on either side can hurt the relations between the two countries.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said that China has assured India that the hydro electric project it was building on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet will not harm Indias interest.

8230;..The issue of flow of Brahmaputra and other rivers of international importance has been repeatedly discussed with the Chinese Premier and even with the Chinese President. We have been assured that nothing will be done which affects Indias interests adversely, Singh told Rajya Sabha while intervening in the reply to a question put to External Affairs Minister S M Krishna.

Replying to supplementaries,Krishna said besides the assurance given at the highest level by the Chinese government,India has verified on its own and is convinced that what Beijing was building was a run-of-the-river project.
