The exit of NSA M K Narayanan and Deputy NSA Shekhar Dutt has cleared the way for a complete revamp of the National Security Council Secretariat with Alok Prasad being the lone IFS officer now holding fort. All of Narayanans appointees have either retired or would be retiring soon. Home Minister P Chidambaram will clearly have his imprint on the next set of appointments there given that the next NSA would be a diplomat and would possibly have a limited influence. Following the gubernatorial appointments,it has been made clear that the Home Ministry will be the sole authority on internal security issues. Jostling has already begun for these top rung posts within the security establishment as an entire overhaul is now imminent.
