Following the rape of a nine-year-old girl in Rajasthans Churu district on Tuesday night,an enraged mob set ablaze part of the Shadulpur railway station and two police outposts.
The police said they have arrested two persons, including a Railway employee,in connection with the rape. Six others have been arrested for damaging public property.
The girl had come to Churu from UP for the annual Gogaji festival. Churu SP N A Farooqi on Wednesday said that though the police had to resort to lathicharge to control the mob,the situation had returned to normal. We have arrested two persons,Manoj Meena and his relative Jaisingh, for the rape. The investigation is still on, Farooqi said. Meena is an electrician with the Railways.
The SP added that extra police personnel have been deployed to avoid any further violence in the region. According to the police, the girls family raised an alarm around 8 pm on Tuesday when they could not find her. Her family later found her lying near the railway tracks and immediately rushed her to hospital while her brother tried to unsuccessfully alert the police. Sources said the rape and the alleged hostility of some policemen on duty enraged the mob who went on the rampage.
The police believe the girl was raped in a nearby Railway guest house.
Police sources said that the mob first torched a Government Railway Police GRP outpost and then a Railway Protection Force RPF outpost soon after, demanding that the accused be arrested immediately. The mob destroyed benches, ceiling fans and ticket sheds in the Shadulpur railway station. The mob also set ablaze four police motorcycles and a jeep.
