Desperate to retain control over their territories,Majlis-e-Ittihad al-Muslimin MIM workers on Thursday attacked Zahid Ali Khan, editor of Urdu daily Siasat who is the Grand Alliance candidate contesting the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat.
Khan, who is contesting on a TDP ticket, was campaigning in Towlichowki area under the Karwan Assembly constituency when his convoy came under heavy stone-pelting by the MIM workers.
CPIM candidate for Karwan Assembly constituency M Srinivas Reddy was also along with him when MIM workers disrupted the campaign procession. Khan and Reddy were escorted to safety by workers of TDP and CPIM but not before the windscreens were smashed and their vehicles damaged by the rampaging MIM workers.
Police said supporters of MIMs Karwan Assembly candidate Mohammed Muqtada Khan alias Afzar Khan objected to Khan campaigning in their area in spite of being forewarned and attacked him when the campaign procession was passing by Towlichowki area.
This is the second attack on the 70-year-old editor, who has taken up cudgels with the MIM and its sitting MP Asaduddin Owaisi in particular.
Last December, supporters of MIM MLA from Chandrayangutta Akbaruddin Owaisi attacked and roughed up Khan and his staff for publishing anti-MIM articles.
The MIM cadres have warned Khan and his supporters not to campaign in the area.
Golconda Police had registered a complaint and were in the process of identifying the persons behind the attack, said Police Commissioner B Prasada Rao.
