Police said that the accused allegedly strangled her after she turned down his proposal for marriage.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Sudheer Kumar said that Satish, also a resident of Greater Noida, is a father of two and ran a fruit cart close to the woman’s house.

“She had shifted to Greater Noida last year after she got a job at a call centre in Noida,” said her aunt, who lives around 200 metres away from her rented accommodation. The aunt said that the victim’s family hails from Agra.

“Seven years ago, her father died of typhoid. Her mother died five years later. One of her younger brothers shifted to Jaipur after their parents’ death. A year later, she, along with her 15-year-old brother, moved to Greater Noida,” said another aunt of the victim.

The woman’s body was spotted under a car by a neighbour around 8 am on Monday, police said. One of the aunts told police that around 3 am on Monday she had received a call from the victim’s brother and was told that his sister had not returned home from work.

“She would usually return by 9 pm. She either took the Metro or book bikes to commute. On days when she had to stay back in the office till late, she would inform. On Sunday night, she did not. So I waited. When I called around 9:30 pm, her phone was switched off. Then I fell asleep,” the brother said.

“I woke up around midnight, but she was still not home. Then I called my aunt. We thought that she would come back in the morning, but then around 6 am, we heard about the body,” he added.

According to the family, she earned around Rs 30,000 a month and took care of her brother who was taking private tuitions in Greater Noida.

Police said that during the probe, they scanned CCTV footage, and eventually tracked Satish. “During questioning, Satish told police that the victim frequented his fruit shop. They had brief conversations. Satish said he had fallen in love with her. Assuming she, too, liked him, he proposed to her but she refused. He then began pressuring her to accept his proposal,” the Additional DCP said.

He added, “On Sunday, after buying vegetables, the woman was walking towards her residence. The accused started following her and pressured her again, but she ignored and kept walking. Furious, he strangled her between two parked cars and dragged her body under one car.” Police said a case under BNS Section 103 was filed.
