Mathai is new Foreign Secy

Ranjan Mathai,Indias ambassador to France,will be the next Foreign Secretary,succeeding Nirupama Rao. He has been Indias envoy in Paris since January 2007.

A 1974-batch IFS officer,59-year-old Mathai will assume charge on August 1 and will have a two-year term,the MEAs official spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said on Monday. He is expected to join South Block in July as officer on special duty.

Mathai,who did his MA in Political Science from Pune University,has served in Indian missions in Vienna,Colombo,Washington,Tehran and Brussels. As Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of External Affairs between January 1995 and February 1998,he headed the division dealing with Indias relations with Bangladesh,Sri Lanka,Myanmar and Maldives.

He was Deputy High Commissioner in Indias mission in the UK from August 2005 to January 2007.
