A 35-Year-Old Man from Hyderabad working as a taxi driver in Melbourne was beaten up by a drunk passenger late on Sunday in the latest case of assaults on Indians in Australia that has raised concerns about in both countries. The attacker was nabbed soon,according to the Australian police.

The case was reported even as the Indian Government stepped up diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety of Indians in that country,thousands of them students. Most of the attacks so far,reported over the past one week,have been carried out on Indian students.

The Prime Minister has spoken to the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. I have spoken to the Australian Foreign Affairs Minister and our Mission in Canberra is in touch with the students from India and also the Australian Government. So,I hope things will be sorted out, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna told reporters in Delhi on Monday. He was responding to questions on the increasing number of attacks on Indian students.

The Ministry of External Affairs also summoned Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy to press Canberra to ensure safety of Indian students.

Speaking in the Australian Parliament,Prime Minister Rudd condemned the attacks. I speak on behalf of all Australians when I say that we deplore and condemn these attacks. On his discussion with PM Manmohan Singh,he said: I said to Prime Minister Singh that the more than 90,000 Indian students in Australia are welcome guests in our country. He added that his government would work closely with the states as a matter of urgency to work on ways to help international students feel safer.
