In a major move to crack down on illegal encroachments, the Mohali Municipal Corporation has decided to intensify public awareness efforts alongside its ongoing anti-encroachment drive. As part of the initiative, councillors will be briefed in detail about the demolition and removal campaign so that they can inform residents at the ward level about the legal position and the need for compliance.
According to officials, the councillors will explain to citizens that the drive is being carried out in accordance with court orders and that adherence is mandatory. “The objective is to encourage people to voluntarily remove illegal encroachments so that coercive action can be avoided,” a senior civic official said. The move is aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring that the campaign is implemented in a peaceful manner.
A formal proposal in this regard will be placed before the Municipal Corporation’s next House meeting for discussion and approval. The agenda note states that encroachments on green belts and road berms, including ramps, platforms, fencing, flower pots and other temporary or permanent structures, are illegal. Residents will be urged to clear such encroachments on their own before enforcement action is initiated.
“This agenda item is being brought so that all councillors are fully informed about the anti-encroachment drive and can effectively communicate the message to residents in their respective wards,” the official added.
The Municipal Corporation believes that advance awareness will help prevent confrontation and ensure smooth implementation of the drive. Officials said that wherever required, the civic body would extend full cooperation and guidance to residents.
The civic authorities also noted that the initiative would not only help reclaim public spaces but would also improve the city’s aesthetics and ease traffic movement, contributing to better urban management in Mohali.
