Thanks to the current parliamentary logjam,a function for conferring the Best Parliamentarian Awards for 2010,2011 and 2012,scheduled for May 9,is likely to be be deferred, unless normalcy returns to both Houses.
Sources said that President Pranab Mukherjee is a little disinclined to present the awards to Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley,Congress MP Karan Singh and JDU president Sharad Yadav at a time when the atmosphere within the two Houses is tense.
Jaitley has been selected for the award for 2010,Singh for 2011 and Yadav for 2012. A committee headed by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar had selected the awardees last month. The awards have been instituted by the Indian Parliamentary Group.
Those conferred the award so far include former prime minister the late Chandra Shekhar, former Speaker Somnath Chatterjee,Pranab Mukherjee, former deputy PM L K Advani,Jaswant Singh,Jaipal Reddy,Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj,Congresss Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi and Mani Shankar Aiyar,SP leader Mohan Singh and BJPs Murli Manohar Joshi.
The mode of selection has already attracted criticism. There have been suggestions to make the selection more scientific and less arbitrary. This may be possible through a well-defined computerised system which gives points to MPs under different heads.
