The US authorities on Wednesday deported a businessman of Indian origin who had reportedly used the services of the Mumbai-based immigration office of terror suspects David Headley and Tahawwur Rana. The businessman, identified as Prakash Kumar Patel, was allegedly living on an expired business visa in the US. He was detained and deported after the documents provided by him were allegedly found to be false.
Officials from the National Investigation Agency NIA and the Intelligence Bureau IB detained Patel on the basis of specific inputs after he landed here by a Continental Airlines flight at about 9 pm on Wednesday, sources at the Indira Gandhi International Airport said.
Patels interrogation by IB sleuths carried on till the early hours on Thursday, after which he was let off. Patel, who originally hails from Mehsana in Gujarat, had left India in 1994 to go to West Indies, where he started his business. Sources said Patel then moved his business to the US and had applied for a US citizenship.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI had reportedly informed the Indian authorities about Patels detention after Headley reportedly told them about his clients who had used the services of his immigration office in Mumbai, sources said.
He was interrogated for at least three hours by IB sleuths at the IGI Airport and his statements recorded. He was let off and allowed to travel to Gujarat as the authorities could not establish his links with any terror organisation. He is said to have travelled from Canada to the US,allegedly on forged documents.
