Union Home Minister Amit Shah released the complete works of Adi Shankaracharya in Gujarati on Thursday and said that he played the role of a “walking university” and waved the flag of Sanatan Dharma in four directions while establishing a gyandip (lamp of knowledge).

Shah released the 15-volume complete works, edited by Gautam Patel, at Tagore Hall in Ahmedabad. The volumes have been published by Sastu Sahitya Mudranalay Trust, led by the Union minister.

Delivering a speech in Hindi, Shah said, “Shankaracharya did not just give a thought. Along with the thought, he gave India its composition; he not only gave knowledge, but also its shape. And he not only gave the idea of moksha, but also showed the way to reach it. Very few people can do this much in a lifetime. At a young age, he undertook a foot march through the country many times. In a way, Adi Shankar played the role of a ‘walking university’ in that era. He not only undertook a foot march, but established India’s identity, established four maths in four directions, and established a gyandip (lamp of knowledge). And he did the task of waving the flag of Sanatan Dharma in all four directions: north, south, east, and west.”

“These four maths in a way not just became religious centres. He made them places for the preservation and propagation of all the Vedas and Upnishads,” Shah said, adding that Shankaracharya formed an organisation so that Sanatan Dharma does not become outdated while passing through the most difficult times.

Shah said the texts of Shankaracharya had answers to all the issues of the society of that era. He added that Shankaracharya removed all suspicions regarding Sanatan Dharma amid the rise of philosophical schools like Buddhism and Jainism and traditions like Kapalika and Tantra in his lifetime.

“It is a big achievement. Whatever ifs and buts that were prevailing then, Adi Shankar provided logical answers to them,” Shah said.

Shah expressed happiness that an institution with which he is attached has published the volumes.
